Paver Repair vs Replacement

Whether to repair or replace a failing paver surface depends on how widespread the failure is, what caused it, and whether the cause can be corrected without disturbing the full installation. Most homeowners want to repair. The question is whether repair will hold.

When Repair Is the Right Answer

Repair makes sense when the failure is localized and the underlying cause is correctable in that area without disturbing sound sections:

  • One section has settled but the rest of the surface is solid and level
  • Edge restraint has failed on one side but the field is still intact
  • Joints have eroded but the base is still sound and compacted
  • Individual pavers have cracked from point loading and need replacement
  • Drainage issue is in a defined area that can be regraded without disturbing the whole surface

In these cases, lifting the affected section, addressing the base, and resetting produces a durable repair that matches the surrounding surface.

When Replacement Makes More Sense

Replacement is the better answer when the base has failed across the installation, not just in one area:

  • Multiple sections settling at different rates — indicates base failure throughout
  • Surface is uneven everywhere, not just in one spot
  • Original installation had no proper base — the whole thing was built on inadequate preparation
  • Drainage problems require regrading the entire surface
  • Material is discontinued and can’t be matched for repair
  • Surface is old enough that targeted repairs would be obvious patches on an aged field

The Honest Assessment

Some contractors default to replacement because the project is larger. Some default to repair because it’s easier to sell. The right answer comes from actually assessing the base condition — lifting a few pavers in multiple areas and evaluating whether the base is solid or compromised.

We’ll make that assessment during the site visit and give you a straightforward recommendation based on what we find.
