Travertine is the dominant patio and pool deck material in Los Angeles for good reason. It stays cool underfoot in direct sun, drains naturally through its porous surface texture, and reads as a finished, high-end surface in a way that concrete products don’t quite replicate.
The tradeoffs are real too. It’s more expensive than concrete pavers, it requires sealing on surfaces that see oil or heavy staining, and it varies lot to lot in a way manufactured products don’t. Understanding both sides of the material helps you decide whether it’s right for your project.
Why Travertine Works in Los Angeles
The LA climate puts specific demands on patio and pool deck materials. Direct sun in summer can make dark surfaces uncomfortably hot underfoot. Thermal cycling between dry heat and occasional cold nights stresses materials that don’t handle expansion and contraction well.
Travertine handles both conditions well. The light coloration typical of most travertine — cream, walnut, silver, gold tones — reflects heat rather than absorbing it. The natural material expands and contracts without the cracking issues that affect large-format concrete surfaces.
Travertine Finishes
Tumbled
The most common finish for exterior applications. Surface and edges are tumbled to create a worn, aged appearance. Good slip resistance when wet — appropriate for pool decks. Slight texture catches debris but sweeps clean easily.
Honed
Flat, matte finish without the tumbled texture. Cleaner contemporary appearance. Still non-slip for most applications. More susceptible to surface staining than tumbled.
Brushed
Wire-brushed surface creates linear texture. Good slip resistance, contemporary appearance. Less common than tumbled but appropriate for modern designs.
Travertine Paver Sizes Common in LA
- 18×18 — most common residential size
- 16×24 — popular for contemporary patterns
- 12×24 — good for running bond patterns
- Mixed sizes (Versailles pattern) — four-piece random pattern, traditional look
Travertine Maintenance
Sealing every 3–5 years protects against oil and organic staining. Required on driveways; recommended on patios. Pool deck travertine should be sealed after installation and periodically thereafter. Acid-based cleaners should be avoided — they etch the surface.
Travertine Paver Cost in Los Angeles
$22–$38 per square foot installed for standard residential applications. Versailles pattern adds approximately $3–$5 per square foot due to increased cut complexity. Pool deck work at similar pricing with coping quoted separately.
